Best Materials for Outdoor Cat Enclosures
An in-depth guide from the team at Cozy Cat Catios.
Framing โ cedar and redwood
Both are naturally rot- and insect-resistant, smell beautiful, and weather to a soft silver-gray. Cedar is our go-to for most Bay Area builds; redwood for premium or coastal projects.
Mesh โ 16-gauge welded wire
Avoid chicken wire and hex netting โ they bend, snag claws, and won't stop a determined raccoon. We use 16-gauge welded wire, powder-coated black for visibility and safety.
Hardware โ stainless or galvanized
Ordinary screws will rust within a year of California weather. We spec stainless steel or hot-dipped galvanized fasteners on every build.
Roofing options
Polycarbonate panels for sun protection, shade sails for breezy summer use, or full mesh tops for open-air designs. We help you weigh sun, rain, and predator considerations.
Flooring choices
From compacted gravel to artificial turf, paver patios, or natural grass. We recommend whatever pairs best with your existing yard and your cat's preferences.
